How to add mesh texture to a sneaker sketch

Add mesh detail with individual pencil marks or by rubbing a pencil over the Isometric Dot Grid Tile beneath your paper. Follow the tile method below.

Add the texture

Start with a sneaker outline on paper, a pencil and the Isometric Dot Grid Tile. The example is already coloured with markers; the mesh texture is added with pencil.

Follow the steps
Watch the tile go under the paper, then see the pencil rubbing bring out the dot pattern.
  1. Choose the mesh panels

Choose the panels you want to show as mesh. In this sketch, the pale panels receive the dot pattern and the red panels remain smooth.

  2. Place the tile underneath

Lift the paper and position the Isometric Dot Grid Tile with its pattern beneath the panel you have chosen. Lay the paper back over the tile.

  3. Rub inside the outline

Hold the paper and tile steady. Rub a pencil across the panel, keeping your marks inside its outline. The dot pattern appears as you rub over the textured tile beneath the paper.

What the texture adds

The dots suggest mesh beside the smooth coloured panels. Keep the outline and shading that describe the shoe’s shape; use the texture to describe its surface.

Try this pattern in your own sketch.
