Same shape.
Different surface
Keep the outline and change the texture. This practice exercise helps you compare patterns before choosing one for your drawing.
For a worked example with footage, follow the sneaker mesh guide.
Choose one surface
A stool seat, a small box or a shoe panel gives you a clear area to work in. Draw the outline a few times, leaving that area empty.
Compare the marks
- Try Fine and Coarse. Use both sides of one tile with the same pencil and similar pressure. Compare how the scale changes the surface.
- Try another pattern. Keep the outline and surrounding drawing the same, so the texture is what changes.
- Step back. Compare the sketches at their intended viewing size. Look for the pattern that best suggests the material you have in mind.
Pattern scale changes how a surface reads. Test both sides of the tile before choosing the finer or coarser mark.
Keep the comparison
Write the tile, side, pencil and paper beside each swatch. You will have a reference for the next time you draw a similar surface.
