Build a grid with the Diagonal Lines Tile

A turn of the tile changes what you can draw. In this lampshade sketch, two pencil passes with the Diagonal Lines Tile create a grid: one set of lines, then another crossing it.

You will need the Diagonal Lines Tile, paper and a pencil. The example also uses markers for the yellow base colour and finishing shading.

Follow the steps
Watch the pencil passes, then follow the steps below.
  1. Create the first set of lines

Start with the lampshade outline and base colour in place. Put the Diagonal Lines Tile beneath the shape and hold it steady. Rub a pencil across the shape to bring out the parallel lines.

  2. Turn the tile

Lift the paper and rotate the tile so its lines will cross your first set. Place the drawing back over it, with the tile beneath the same area.

  3. Add the crossing lines

Hold the paper and tile steady and rub across the shape again with your pencil. The new lines cross the earlier ones to form a grid. Both sets come from the same Diagonal Lines Tile.

The grid is complete after the two pencil passes. The demonstration then adds marker shading to finish the lampshade.
